SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate unanimously passed legislation sponsored by State Sen. Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington) to increase collaboration with the Department of Defense on child abuse and neglect cases filed against members of the military.
“This will allow the state and federal authorities to work together to fight child abuse,” said Sen. Barickman. “As a veteran of the Army National Guard, it is especially important to me that we make sure military authorities are aware of any allegations of child abuse and neglect.”
House Bill 4425 requires the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to notify the U.S. Department of Defense if a member of the Armed Forces is named as the alleged perpetrator in a child abuse or neglect report. If the accused is a member of the Illinois National Guard, DCFS is required to notify the Office of the Adjutant General as well.
The U.S. Department of Defense has urged states to adopt similar legislation.
