Barickman’s child abuse legislation signed into law

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has signed into law legislation sponsored by State Sen. Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington) that will help fight child abuse committed by members of the military.

“This will be a new level of collaboration between state and federal authorities in the battle against child abuse,” said Sen. Barickman. “It is especially important to me as a veteran of the Army National Guard that state and federal authorities have available every resource to investigate allegations of child abuse against members of the armed services.”

House Bill 4425 requires the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to notify the U.S. Department of Defense if a member of the Armed Forces is named as the alleged perpetrator in a child abuse or neglect report. If the accused is a member of the Illinois National Guard, DCFS is required to notify the Office of the Adjutant General as well.

The U.S. Department of Defense has urged states to adopt similar legislation.
