Senate passes Barickman’s ‘Elder Abuse Awareness Day’

Springfield – The Illinois Senate passed legislation filed by State Sen. Jason Barickman’s (R-Bloomington), to recognize June 15, 2017 as “Elder Abuse Awareness Day.”

“It’s awful to think how anyone could hurt and abuse any of our most vulnerable residents, but it is a reality for many older citizens,” said Barickman. “We need to raise awareness to help stop abuse and prevent it from happening again.”

Senate Resolution 284 recognizes June 15 as Elder Abuse Awareness Day and urges all residents of Illinois to learn the signs of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Elder abuse is a crisis that knows no borders or socioeconomic boundaries, taking the lives of approximately five million older Americans each year. Many victims do not report abuse or neglect to law enforcement or social service agencies.

“Part of the fight to end the crisis of elder abuse is to make sure people know about the problem, so they can spot and report suspected abuse,” said Barickman. “If you are aware of any elderly abuse or neglect, please contact your local authorities immediately.”
