Sen. Barickman statement on House Amendment 1 to Senate Bill 1

Springfield –State Sen. Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington) released the following statement after House Democrats filed House Amendment 1 to Senate Bill 1:

“In the last 48 hours of session, the House Democrats have doubled down on shoveling money to Chicago and its public school system. Instead of creating parity and equity for our struggling school districts, their latest version of school funding ‘reform’ creates more special deals for one district, shoveling $700 million into CPS at the expense of our state’s 851 other school districts.”

The negotiated pension pick up isn’t in the legislation, but the House majority found other ways to once again rig the school funding formula to help Chicago. By manipulating what should be an evidence based funding model, and sleight-of-hand accounting, CPS is made to appear poorer and needier, pushing them to the front of the line for state funding at the expense of our downstate and suburban school districts and taxpayers.”

“Schools in my district should not continue to pay for the mismanagement in Chicago under the guise of ‘reform.’ House Democrats have proven with this amendment that they aren’t serious about reforming our broken school funding system.”

“We could be, and should be working together on a real bipartisan solution that helps all schools.”
